Problem to detect infected files or AR attack if mount from Unix is used

Dear center /support 

1.The usage capabilities of NFS are similar to those of shared folders.

Nevertheless, the QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV exit point is not alerted by operations made in NFS.

This opens a security gap as our Anti-Ransomware is based on this exit point.QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV exit point is not alerted by operations made in NFS.

The new QIBM_QP0L_OBJ_CLOSE and QIBM_QP0L_OBJ_OPEN are not sufficient as they do not show the operation. They are also not available 

AFAIK for earlier releases.

 We need a real time access to operation. Such is provided by Exit Programs.

Ransomware attacks IBM i. Without it, there is virtually no possibility to protect the IBM i.

This is a huge hole in the security of the IBM i and it should be addressed immediately.

 

2.Test that we did : 

We mount AS/400 IFS directory (mount = using NFS server) from Unix:

AV Exit points QIBM_QP0L_SCAN_CLOSE and QIBM_QP0L_SCAN_OPEN are aware of reading and writing  file in the mounted directory.

AV RT respond to Unix commands vi and cat.

There a little different between vi (read and save) and cat (only read):

vi : AV only writes line in the av.log of our AV product 

cat: AV writes line in av.log, also file attribute’s  “Scan status” changed to *SUCCESS

 So the QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV is not aware of the activities:

2.Explanation about NFS

NFS is one of the most widely used protocols for file servers. NFS implementations are available for most modern operating systems (OSes), including the following: Hewlett Packard Enterprise HP-UX. IBM AIX.

    The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority Idea that is important to be addressed. From a security perspective, this is a valid request. An exit point similar to the existing IFS exit point is needed for NFS.


    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your Idea.

    The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address as the lack of this feature opens the door for potential security risks. CEAC suggest to implement an exit point similar to QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV for NFS.

    Exit point QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV is only used with the file server and IBM i NetServer and not the Network File System Server (NFS).
    The QIBM_QPWFS_FILE_SERV exit point will not be modified to be used with NFS. However, we recognize that NFS does not provide similar capabilities and will consider this as we plan future work.
