Implement JSON_LEN SQL scalar function (returns # of elements in JSON array)

Please implement a new SQL scalar function JSON_LEN, which returns the number of elements in a JSON array.

if MyJSON contains "{"MyObj":{"MyArray":["One","Two","Three"]}}"

exec sql set :NumElems = JSON_LEN(:MyJSON, '$.MyObj.MyArray');

sets NumElems to 3.

    The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority Idea that should be addressed.

    This would be an improvement that the community would appreciate.

    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual IBM Ideas on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your Idea.

    For more information about CAAC, see www.common.org/caac

    Thank you for providing a use case. That is helpful information.

    IBM will use this Idea as input to planning, but no commitment is made or implied. This Idea will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

    I would find JSON_LEN useful in embedded programming.

    I could use it to check if a JSON array even has any elements.

    I could use it to get the number of elements in a JSON array, then code a native loop to extract each element with JSON_VALUE or JSON_QUERY into a separate string, which I could then process. This might be simpler and more efficient than a cursor over a complicated JSON_TABLE call.

    I might point out, also, that many other SQL and DB2 implementations have a form of JSON_LEN - mySQL, SQL Server, DB2 for IBM z/OS, PostgreSQL, SQLLite, etc.

    In fact, in some implementations, JSON_LEN can return the number of elements in an array, or the number of members in an object.

    IBM needs more information to further assess your Idea.

    Could you elaborate on how you would use the result of a JSON_LEN function in your application? Would you be using JSON_TABLE after the JSON_LEN to re-shred the same JSON document?
