IBM Rational Developer for i RPG and COBOL + Modernization Tools, Java Edition V9.6 Core Multiplatform Multilingual eAssembly (CJ2JVML)
comes with many tools for exposing IBM i backend business logic to web based application written in Java for the Websphere Application Server platform.
IBM Rational Developer for i RPG & COBOL Tools V9.8 Core Multiplatform Multilingual eAssembly (G07VDML) Does not offer any of these tools even though it appears under our download entitlements in Passport Advantage as "IBM Rational Developer for i RPGCOBOL plus Modernization Tools, Java Ed".
The tools included a whole host web technologies that we do use. We write SOAP and REST based web services, as well as customer facing Web Apps. The tooling made it relatively easy to make great solutions for our vendors, government agencies and customers.
The "Program Call Bean Wizard" is of particular importance. That wizard, generates Java program call stubs and encapsulates and abstracts the details around JT400. We use it to call RPG Service Programs that deliver payloads requested by Web Clients. We also use the tooling to generate Webservices applications using the various top-down or bottom-up generation tools. These a Web Applications are deployed to Websphere servers not running on IBM i.
The Web Tooling in RDI 9.6 + Modernization Tools, Java Edition V9.6 is great and I suspect it is a subset of a full blown RAD product.
