IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

LPM Fails On Systems With Non-Functional Physical Adapter Ports

When attempting to use Live Partition Mobility (LPM) to move a logical partition (LPAR) from one system to another, source partition virtual to physical connectivity is first validated before executing the migration.

Unfortunately, this negates the possibility of using LPM to migrate hosts off a system with broken hardware without manual intervention.

Reason: the current validation process requires that all physical hardware tied to virtual hardware must be present.

A recommendation for future development efforts would be to allow for the following:

1. Enable partitions to be migrated even if the physical hardware connections are non-functional. Instead of terminating the process, give the customers the choice to continue.

2. As a safeguard, require that the target host be able to support all of the connectivity that the source partition requires. In general, a customer would not be LPMing to a host with broken hardware, but they may be migrating *away* from one.
