IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Enable Shared Processor Pool within PEP 2.0

In the current implementation of PEP 2.0, the processor resources available in operation are composed of the respective Base Activations per machine and the additional credits. The limit of the usable resources corresponds to the total installed processors of all participating machines.

If a customer wishes to set a lower limit, this is currently not possible because the shared processor pools are always set up individually on each machine and there is therefore no possibility of setting a limit.

If a shared processor pool could now be set up directly on the created enterprise pool, it would be possible to define the maximum usable processor resources as required.

The consumption limits defined on shared processor pools is currently enforced by the PowerVM Hypervisor within a 10ms dispatch window. Within the window, the hypervisor can control the dispatching of the various partitions assigned to a shared processor pool such that the sum total consumption of all the partitions does not exceed the pool limit.

With PEP 2.0, the cloud management console (CMC) is the entity that collects, records and reports the CPU consumption of all the partitions across all the servers in the PEP pool. The data collected by CMC is a 1 minute sample that is correlated by CMC. Net, the hypervisor on one server does not have any knowledge of the CPU consumption of partitions on other servers. IBM would not be able to leverage the existing CMC support for accounting of shared processor pools as this is a one-way communication from the HMC to CMC and its not acceptable to use a 1 minute granularity for making dispatching decisions.

To implement this request, we would need a control point and a high-speed communication mechanism between the various PowerVM hypervisors participating in a PEP 2.0 pool in order to maintain the customer and vendor expectations about the consumption limits of shared processor pools. This would require a significant investment so IBM cannot commit to providing this support at this point in time. We will continue to consider this as a long range goal as there is lots of interest in such a feature.
