IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Port Docker to 5733OPS

Docker is a container platform that allows to deploy self-sufficient applications and services. It allows to build agile software delivery pipelines to ship new features faster, more securely and with confidence.

Use Case:

It would be great to be able to use the robustness of the platform to build microservices architectures based on Docker.

It would also allows to use the new ASP.Net Core from Microsoft on our platform, and that would be a real plus, furthermore as the port of .Net Core itself as an option on 5733 OPS we've been talked about a couple of years ago seems to have vanished.

IBM does not plan to implement Docker on IBM i in the near term. Many existing Docker applications are Linux applications (and some are now Windows applications). This would include ASP.NET Core, which would still not be supported if we allowed Docker-level container technologies on IBM i. IBM i applications wanting complete isolation have benefited from LPAR deployments and other virtualization technologies.

While .NET core is not in the works, a community effort is underway to bring .NET technology by way of the Mono project. More information can be found at https://github.com/MonoOni/

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Although this RFE was submitted as Low priority, and the other Docker RFE, which was submitted as High, has been closed as a Duplicate, we also believe it is High priority. Please be sure to review the comments on the associated RFE for further clarity on use cases.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

I understand this is a prerequisite for Verse on Prem on Power i.

My understanding is that Docker is required for Verse on prem. As a Domino on i customer, this is required for us to continue to use IBM for collaboration.

Also the other way around would be nice. Running IBMi as an image on "Docker on power"

I agree with that incl. the .Net Core Topic!
If you want to create Microservices on IBM i you should also take a look on IceBreak. With IceBreak you can create very fast Web- and Microservices build in RPG, Cobol and any other ILE language.
