Log Netserver "Unknown User" authentication attempts in System Audit Journal

If a user attempts to authenticate via NetServer and the IBM i user is valid but the password is not, this results in a VP entry being written to the Audit Journal.

If a user attempts to authenticate via NetServer and the IBM i user is NOT VALID, no entry is written to the Audit Journal.

Would it be possible to add an entry to the audit journal in these circumstances?

I can see this information is logged in summary in the NetServer Unknown User Statistics (screenshot attached) but there is no detail of who and when these attempts were made.

Use Case:

SysAdmin / SecOps wishes to detect potential Brut Force attacked on IBM i via NetServer.

Such attacks will could be detected more quickly if you do not have to wait for a valid user to be guessed.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

Currently, nothing is logged in the audit journal under these circumstances. So, for example, this could be used as a DOS (Denial of Service) attack by flooding the server with requests and you would not see the cause logged in the audit journal. This feature would prevent this sort of issue.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

Thank you for submitting this request.

We understand that it would be beneficial to know an attempt is being made to connect to NetServer with an invalid user and to be able to monitor this through the audit journal.
