IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

allow QSYS2.CHANGE_IOP to reset all IOPs

IBM introduced SQL function QSYS2.CHANGE_IOP to reset ISCSI IOPs only.

We would like to have support to use QSYS2.CHANGE_IOP function to IPL other IOPs (like virtual fibre channel IOPs - CMBxx) as well.

This IDEA is very similar to what I proposed
    https://ibm-power-systems.ideas.ibm.com/ideas/IBMI-I-1048

I am happy if the VRYCFG option for *TAPMLB devices will be OK, please make sure some mention of what is being reset is added to the *HELP screen

If VRYCFG with RESET does the same as IPL of IOP in SST this would be sufficient!

The IBM team discussed this Idea today, and we want to be sure you are aware that you could use this existing command:

    VRYCFG CFGOBJ(TAPMLB01) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON) RESET(*YES)

The VRYCFG command would be used after configuration changes like you have mentioned. Scenario would be something like this:

I just changed my tape library configuration and I want to have changes propagated to all the device drivers for that tape library.

I need to find all the IOPs that have that device attached and vary off all the tape devices (stand-alone and libraries) that are on those IOPs.
-- Note, there can not be any disk attached because those can not be made inactive, so the VRYCFG method won?t work.

Then I do the VRYCFG with reset for one of the tape libraries or tape devices attached to each of those IOPs to reset the IOPs.

Then you need to Vary On (without reset) all the other tape devices that were also attached to the same IOP(s).

The above procedure can be written into a program to make it easier to do.

    Would this fit your need?

Thank you for responding promptly with a particular scenario that demonstrates the need. The IBM team is discussing potential options. This Idea will be updated once those discussions reach a conclusion.

    Hi,

we occassionally have the need to reset/IPL FC IOPs where tape libraries/drives are attached because of reconfiguration on library side or some connection problems.

It's not so painful if you only have 1 LPAR connected to 1 library, but as we have a lot of LPARs attached to at least 2 libraries it generates a lot of work.

Thank you for your IBM Idea about extending the QSYS2.CHANGE_IOP function to IPL other types of IOPs, such as the virtual Fibre Channel IOPs.

The team here at IBM has started to analyze the value and feasibility of your request ? we do have a couple of questions:

    1. VIOS attribute changes that affect a virtual Fibre Channel client generally cause the IOP to reIPL automatically, so we are not clear as to why you feel there is a need for this function with virtual Fibre Channel IOPs.

    2. We tend to implement SQL services for functions that are performed frequently and therefore would benefit from some simplification and automation, but reIPLing an IOP is normally required only as part of a service procedure. Are you finding it necessary to frequently IPL some types of IOPs?
