IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Allow seamless Git integration with RDi

Make Git adoption in RDi seamless for RPG developers. RDi currently has iProjects which can be used to adopt Git, but iProjects operate on the premise of offline editing. Not all RPG developers are going to be editing offline.

Use Case:

Focus on allowing RPG programmers to keep their source in *SRCPF members and under the covers have the source be synchronized with the IFS. The reason for synchronizing with *SRCPF members is so it disrupts their existing processes as little as possible.

An example user experience... User right clicks on library and selects "Manage with Git". At that point RDi will create a metadata file in the library containing config settings (i.e. IFS directory of where the Git repo exists, i.e. /home/aaron/libname).

Include documentation for how to install Git in PASE (i.e. yum install git), or make it easily installable with a click of a button.

Richard Schoen has created iForGit, in his words on github, "an IBM i Specific Git Client application that allows Git to be more easily integrated with RDi development environments and traditional 5250 SEU development environments for working with source file members or IFS based source members and seamlessly integrating them with a Git repository for version control and the ability to visually review and compare changes." Here is a link to it - https://github.com/richardschoen/iforgit

The web site for iForGit is https://iforgit.com/ - it does have a cost, I believe. Richard says it is "...as nice alternative to expensive version control systems...". I don't know the cost myself, however.

The CAAC has reviewed this IBM Idea and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority Idea that is important to be addressed. This needs to happen for the improvement of the platform. Not everyone is going to move to Merlin. This will allow the writing of code in a low code solution which will accelerate the use of RPG.

We have reviewed this requirement and we feel it would be a beneficial enhancement to the product. We hope to be able to add it to our development plans in the future.

Although the theme of this request is consistent with our business strategy, it is not committed to the release that is currently under development.

A preliminary evaluation of this request indicates that it is consistent with our business strategy. Further evaluation of this RFE is underway.

This enhancement would take Git out of the world of rarefied open source experts and make it available to a regular good developer.
