This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

The compare facility is a simple text compare. It easily gets confused when changes to source are too complex. It would be nice if the source compare had at least a little language specific intelligence. In RPG for instance the compare routines could recognize complete procedures and subroutines by name, and if there are extra subroutines or procedures recognize that fact, and use that to improve the comparison. Right now I am looking at a module source for a service program that has some missing procedures, and some extra procedures on one side, and the text compare is completely confused, failing to match procedures that exist in both sources in the vicinity of the differences. It does eventually get back on track, but a little intelligence that knows that a procedure or subroutine is an independent entity to be compared on it's own would make the compare more accurate.
By the way, in my current case PDM option 54 correctly identifies the differences while the RDi Text Compare includes things as differences that are actually the same.

IBM Power Systems Development - RDi team
We have reviewed this requirement and we feel it would be a beneficial enhancement to the product. We hope to be able to add it to our development plans in the future.
Speaking of language specific intelligence you should also see the RFE on syntax highlighting and outline in the compare view. I's a pity (if not a shame) that CODE/400 is still the better tool for comparison. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=81749
Although the theme of this request is consistent with our business strategy, it is not committed to the release that is currently under development.
I have added a screenshot to illustrate the issue.
Attachment (Description): This screen shot shows some source that has been compared using RDi's Text Compare utility. On the left is a procedure UserIsConnectedInternally() which actually exists in both source files, and is the same in both. On the right is a procedure SetUids() which only exists in the source file on the right. As you can see, UserIsConnectedInternally() is incorrectly included in the difference. Note that option 54 from PDM does the compare correctly.
