IBM i DDS Support for 5250 Advanced Function Display Data Stream (AFDDS)

Enhance IBM i DDS to support 5250 AFDDS functions (see related RFEs). This would enable IBM i programmers to upgrade their "green screen" sign-on and application displays with fonts, color logos and overlays as they can do today on AFPDS printers, as well as PC controls such as list boxes, combo boxes, push buttons, radio buttons, etc.

Use Case:

Allow the DDS “FONT” keyword to display text in alternate fonts on PC displays running IBM i ACS.
Allow the DDS “LINE” keyword to display lines on PC displays running IBM i ACS.
Allow the DDS “OVERLAY” keyword to display graphical overlays on PC displays running IBM i ACS.
Allow the DDS “POSITION” keyword to display text and graphics at any position PC displays running IBM i ACS.
Display company logo and background on Qinter sign-on display. (See the attached document for an example)
IBM i programmers could develop GUI applications which:
• Display subfiles as list boxes, real pushbuttons and drop-down lists.
• Display company dashboard with list boxes and graphs.
• Display employee photos with personnel applications.
• Display property photos with real estate applications.

A real solution would require to build a native graphic display file and toolchain.
An essential step to project IBM i really in the future.

ISV is not really a solution; operating system GUI are fundational, they must be supported by IBM to really take off, if a knowledge investment must be made.

Better soon than later to start to do something in this area.

There are many options on IBM i for doing rich modern user interfaces. These include many of the newer languages that have been added to IBM i along with the many ISVs that offer great options in this space. IBM has no plans to updates the 5250 data stream.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM not implement this request. Rather, the requester should look at the various modernization tools and products that are available.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
