IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Allow authority on IFS share (logical)

Allow additional authority (for example *USE/*EXCLUDE) on the logical IFS share name instead of only on the underlying physical path.

Use Case:

Typically the IFS root is shared, however this should only be accessible for administrators while now the share can be mapped by any user and only the actual object authority is in effect (which can't be always adjusted or is often insufficient like for the IFS root).

I therefore hope that at least the exit program is enhanced so that the share name is provided, and the mapping can be rejected.

This is supported in IBM i 7.5.

An additional layer of security has been added for IBM i NetServer to allow securing access to the server or specific shares through the use of *AUTL objects. Administrators can now restrict which users can access IBM i NetServer or specific shares without changes to underlying object permissions.

With several recent attacks on medical laboratories in my country with ransomware this change is getting more important each day.

The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to address.

CEAC has seen an increase of application developers/vendors using system share by the IFS root, which can make IFS vulnerable. A more straightforward way to close the door and to keep the OS secure is needed. CEAC would like IBM to consider a review of the exit points and adding more information.

Background: The CEAC members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

GDPR regulations also make this level of security more and more important. Without this feature it is hard to comply with such regulations and might require us to shut down NetServer access completely which would break many applications.

This request was previously declined. See the "Reconsideration Tab" for a link to the original request. We will take another look, and update this RFE once evaluation is complete.
