Improve MSD Reclaim time

With 512 / 4096 sectored disk units, MSD reclaim runs single threaded. This can result in a MSD taking hours to complete. On a system with 4tb of memory C6004242 - Reclaim main storage: pass 1 step 2 took four hours and fifteen minutes to complete. When the client performed the MSD they had 4tb of memory and have since increased that to 6tb. By the end of the year will likely be at 12tb.

Use Case:

MSD is used to collect data in the event a client has experienced a catastrophic event that has impacted business operations. The data collected greatly improves the chance of identifying root cause.

IBM i 7.5 and IBM i 7.4 TR 5 and IBM i 7.3 TR 11 contain the code which improves the MSD Reclaim time of systems with 512 and 4096 sectored disk units.

Thank you for submitting this RFE. We are implementing an improvement to the MSD reclaim time for configurations with 512 / 4096 sectored disks. Although IBM's plans may change so we cannot commit a solution, we do intend to deliver this improvement with the next set of IBM i Technology Refreshes and will update this RFE again then.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. Although it is not a high frequency event to even experience a Main Storage Dump, when it happens it is certainly a significant impact to get the LPAR back into business.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
