Enhancement Requested for HMC Load and Apply of Adapter Firmware

Customer Gannett submitted this request as a LUG requirement. We want to be notified when new versions of adapter firmware become available. (IBM team is investigating Web Call Home to accomplish this.) We need a mechanism to retrieve the code and get it onto the adapters. Some of us may need this done from locally attached/networked storage as our HMC may or may not be permitted to access IBM via the internet, so a PC/flash stick transfer of the data from a device that can get to the web will be necessary. We want the load and apply of the firmware to be done from the HMC (ideally concurrently while VIOS is active or as worst case part of an IPL of the VIOS). However, if via an IPL we need to make certain that all adapters with new firmware can get updated during the SAME IPL -- even if multiple adapter types need new firmware. Ideally, a single click to do the load and apply (with or without an IPL being required).

    Hi,

    1. Off-network updates are supported on the HMC. You have to have the media prepped with the firmware as well as the microcode catalog file, which tells the update process what new firmware is available to be able to be compared against what is on the system.

    Typically IO adapter firmware updates doesn't required a CEC IPL, but might affect some client partitions or workloads running on the system using the IO adapter. Also, is the request to have multiple IO adapters updated with 1-click.
