This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed. Even if this enhancement were to be delivered, RPG would not be able to process commands with RTNVAL(*YES) parms. The Integrated Language Environment of IBM i allows programmers to combine modules compiled from different programming languages, so programmers can easily add CLLE modules to their programs to accomplish tasks that need CL's support for commands.
If RPG provided this feature, it would be implemented using an API (system(), or QCMDEXC, or QCAPCMD). It would not be able to handle commands like RTVSYSVAL that return values.

Of course this will be diferent!
Imagine if in a CL PGM we would have to run all comamds only through the QCMDEXC service. We got used to run a command not as a string, but part of the language, and that is so beatiful, it is even hard to imagine how could we be without it.. Why not have it in RPG.
Besides that, the QCMDEXC service cannot return values, it cannot be issued for RTVSYSVAL, RTVMBRD, RTVMSG and many other commands.
How would this be different from the QCMDEXC service currently available?
