Preserve SQL view formatting

When creating complex views their readability is highly dependent on the formatting of the complex SQL statement.

When retrieving the SQL definition of an existing view (in order to update it), the majority of the formatting is lost however which makes the view unreadable.

This requires us to keep the view definition in a separate IFS file which is a potential risk if someone forgot to update this source and changed the view directly.

I would therefore be an added value if the formatting of the SQL statement in the view is preserved.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

Control characters such as tabs and new lines within the view body are preserved as part of the view text. Blank characters are always condensed to a single blank. Use tabs and new line characters when you want to preserve formatting. Another option is to use the SQL Formatter within Access Client Solutions (ACS) Run SQL Scripts to reformat text.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a MEDIUM priority requirement that should be addressed.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

I'm using ACS - Schema's, Views, Generate SQL... but it only partially preserves the layout (indentation is mainly lost).

I tried your suggestion looking at SQLVIEWS... but the column VIEW_DEFINITION for my view is null ???

If you create your view from ACS (run SQL script) and get your view from SYSVIEWS with ACS ( run SQL script) - then the formatting is preserved. New line chars are stored in the view metadata.

So what is your process since it does not work ?
