Update RPG compiler to define variables using a means like REFFLD() in DDS

In DDS you can use REFFLD() keyword to define a field just like an external table field.

Please enhance this for individual fields in RPG so that we do not need to add a template table or DS just to define program variables like the database.

Use Case:

It seems like patterning the keyword like the REFFLD keyword from DDS.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.

The whole point of just asking for REFFLD() to point to a single column is that don't want the entire master table definition loaded into the program object definition. I can get what you describe by defining an external DS but I don't want this.

We also use master definition tables to define our database tables and it would be nice to have those table columns as refernce points.

Since having a standard of using REFFLD to child columns implies having a "master" table of these definitions, why wouldn't it be part of the standard to import the same table into an RPGLE module/program so that comparable *LIKE DEFN definitions can occur within the object?
