Support Modern Authentication with Office365 - Configuration help

Hi Team,

Please guide/assist with potential mail server setting on their cloud iSeries to accommodate potential O365 authorization settings changes?

Use Case:

This is the situation and info i have received:
This enhancement is needed because most of the clients use Microsoft Office365 for email services, and the only way available currently on Resilient to connect to a mailbox hosted in O365 is via login/password (Basic Authentication).
However, Microsoft recently announced that in 2021, it will be retiring Basic Authentication for legacy protocols in Exchange online and will use Modern Authentication instead. Legacy protocols stand for : EWS, EAS, IMAP4, POP3, RPS.
Once this change will be effective, there will be no way to continue to use the mailboxes hosted in O365 on Resilient using Basic Authentication via IMAP (method that my client currently use).

IBM previously requested more clarifying information and it was not provided by Srikanth's customer. The request has been closed because the additional information was not provided.

    Hi Srikanth

Can you confirm what it is you are trying to achieve?

The IMAP protocol you mention is typically used to download and synchronise local mail folders and their emails, which would imply that you want your IBM i to be an IMAP client which seems an unusual use case?

Sending emails outboard from an IBM i to O365 via SMTP is not changing. You can also configure inbound email from O365 to IBM i without issue. So, if you just want to be able to send email from your IBM i to the outside world via O365 then there is little changing.

If you want to receive email from O365 into your IBM i then again I would be suggesting SMTP.

I hope this is of some use and I look forward to hearing more about what you and your client would like IBM i to do with email.

    Cheers Brad

Currently, IBM i POP3 server only authenticate with client using user id and password. IBM i SMTP server can accept PLAIN authentication method (userid & password), and LOGIN method ( the userid & password are encoded in BASE64). When sending email to other mail server, IBM i SMTP client support CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, PLAIN.

To further investigation, we need understand how IBM i mail services are integrated with the Microsoft O365 and what's the planned configuration to use in O365.
    1. Are emails stored on IBM i SMTP server and the emails are retrieved from IBM i with O365 POP3 protocol ? How are the SMTP configured on IBM i currently ?
    2. Are emails sent from IBM i to O365 ? Are emails forwarded to O365 automatically? Is IBM i Mail Hub used currently ?
    3. After the O365 disable the basic authentication, what authentication methods are supported?
