Determine combined size of selected fields

When you are making overlaid fields within a DS you often need to create a master field to contain all the overlain fields and that needs to be of at least a certain size.

It would be nice if we could have the editor combine the size of all fields selected so that we could determine the size of our overlaying field more simply. How or which view this occurs in is not something I think needs to be tied to the LPEX editor only. Maybe another view or the outline could help with this.

Use Case:

In some view or the editor select multiple fields and then the total size appears "magically". I then use that amount as the size definition in my DS overlay field.

    Your mistake is that some DS definitions require a size defined to them. For example, *DTAARA DS require a length.

    We have evaluated this request and determined that this enhancement is unnecessary because if you omit the data type information, the RPG compiler (and the RDi outline view) will automatically define the overlaying field as character and determine its length based on the overlays.

    For example, the "person" subfield in the following data structure will be defined with type character and length 28.

    dcl-ds ds;
    person;
    name char(25) overlay(person);
    age packed(5) overlay(person : *next);
    end-ds;
