IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Device driver with multiple receive queues for family of 10GB adaptersCCIN = 2CE3.

Customer uses Virtual IP on pair of 10Gb ETHERNET adapters EN15/EN16 (CCIN 2CE3) with only one port populated/active on each card. With huge traffic when number of frames increased above 147K frames/second driver fully takes one CPU and can not scale up further in order to service more frames. This creates a bottleneck and perfofmance significantly degrades since number of frames are increasing as more retries coming from client computers. All details of the problem described in the CASE TS003136733, and the reason for this adapter behaviour is in the driver which works as designed. In this case developement has stated that adapters with CCIN 2CE3 are capable for handling multiple queues but device driver didn't design to use it.

At the moment, customer has reached the Design limitation of currently existing Driver, and wants to initiate enchancement for the driver in order to allow these adapters to use multi-queueing as described by developement.

Use Case:

At the moment, customer has reached the Design limitation of currently existing Driver, and wants to initiate enchancement for the driver in order to allow these adapters to use multi-queueing as described by developement.

IBM believes that the request described has been solved and is available with 7.3 TR9 and 7.4 TR3.

In those tech refresh versions, the device driver associated with Ethernet adapters with CCIN 2B93, 2CC0, 2CC1, 2CE3, and 2CE4 added multiple receive queue support. This allows the adapter to spread incoming receive traffic onto separate receive queues using Receive Side Scaling (RSS). These separate receive queues can then be processed on different CPU cores removing the design limitation mentioned in the description. The device driver will automatically scale the number of receive queues based on the number of processors assigned to the partition. The minimum number of receive queues is 2 and the maximum number of receive queues is 7.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.
