Merged idea

This idea has been merged into another idea. To comment or vote on this idea, please visit IBMI-I-2569 Replace LAN Console with vHMC light support in ACS.

IBM i Console Via HMC/ASMI Port Merged

Re-enable IBM i Thin Console functionality to allow simple to connect and configure console for a None HMC managed IBM i Server.

The HMC still remains the best solution for managing a Power System in General and ro IBM i Console access specifically. The current alternative is the Operations Console which has been greatly improved of the years but can still be problematic to connect to over more complex network security or on PCs with multiple Network interfaces.

I would suggest implementing this via the IBM ACS software we use to connect to IBM i for everything else.

The principle advance would be that you would have a simpler console connection process when initially building a new system or when reloading an existing system.

Another advantage being that this solution would not need a dedicated NIC port on and IBM i LPAR, freeing that up for other use. Instead this would connect via either of the HMC / ASMI Ethernet ports shipped as standard on all Power servers since Power5.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

Would it not be an improvement if the Console firmware supported DHCP when assigned to a LAN port? That should allow for connectivity that overcomes the network security limitations. Just thinking of what would remove the requirment for me to be on site. As it is now, I open up a box, configure with essentially a directly connected laptop to LAN console port, just to get onto the server and setup a DHCP ethernet line. Would be nice if the console supported DHCP. BOOTP is increasingly not supported in switches.
