IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

BRMS Recovery

If backup policy is based on Full (i.e. Sunday) and Incrementals during the week, when restore happens, all files, members and IFS objects that have been deleted during the week will be also restored.

BRMS should keep track of the objects in place when the backup happens so that when incremental restores are happening, objects deleted when the backup happened are also deleted when the incremental restore is complete.

The BRMS team understands the requested support for a scratch recovery environment, however, due to the impracticality and associated development effort this design change will not be pursued. Therefore, the Idea request will be closed.

The recommended BRMS strategy for this type of dynamic environment where objects are continuously changing with objects being removed is to exclusively use full backups. A possible option would be to make use of full system flash copies.

Unfortunately, the amount of data required to maintain deleted objects accurately and reliably between full and incremental backups isn?t feasible.

As it is a scratch install, using OLD will not be of any use as it would just not restore anything.

Omit objects to be restored is a huge tasks to identify in advance as it does affect any IFS object, any Library OBJECT and Members inside multimembers SETs. And that is exactly what I am requesting BRMS to do, restore to the right point with the right objects like if it was a restore from FULL backup.

    *OLD

    Only the objects in the library having a saved version are restored;

that is, the version of each object currently in the library is

replaced by the saved version. Only objects known to the library

are restored. If any saved objects are no longer part of the online

version of the library, they are not added to the library; an

informational message is sent for each one, but the restore

    continues.

The BRMS team needs more information to further assess your Request for Enhancement. The amount of data required to accuratley and reliably maintain deleted objects between full and incremental backups along with the complexity of managing this data does not fit the BRMS strategy. There are other alternatives including specifying the OPTION(*OLD) parameter on the restore command or globally setting the BRMS Recovery Policy through the WRKPCYBRM *RCY command and changing the Option parameter to *OLD. Using *OLD indicates that only the objects that exist on the system are restored. Have you tried using this restore option and does it meet this requirement?

Additionally, there are parameters to omit objects on the restore commands that can be used as well.

We would appreciate your feedback on whether this proposed solution would meet your needs. If yes, we would like to close this Idea request. Please let us know your thoughts on this alternate proposed solution.
