Included named indicators to avoid running out of Indicator limit 01 through 99 in DSPF

Our clients use Green Screen Displays which need many modifications. Most often when 3 or more screens with subfiles are used in the DSPF, the indicator count is exhausted. I know that IBM introduced 3 indicators for each option to overcome the limit of 01-99 indicators. But if we had named indicators inside of DSPF similar to RPGLE it would be of great help than just limiting to numeric indicators.

Use Case:

For N01N02N03 - DSPF can allow short named indicators instead of just numbers. As listed below.

There are possible options to work around this, IBM has no plans on adding this directly.

If it is convenient or necessary to remain within the 5250 paradigm then moving away from display files and adopting the "User Interface Manager" (UIM) can be a good solution. UIM operates on a more modern object orientated, event driven methodology where the look and feel of the panels is consistent with the operating system.

Hi Jason, I agree that we can move off 5250 screens altogether. But we still have applications running on 5250 which need to run at their best abilities. We can live with multiple display files, but when we can use a single file with 32 formats, why go for a separate object altogether.

When the named indicator concept was brought in place - this fix for printer files or display files should have come in place. I believe, somehow the concept fell off favor.

Personally my vote is no. You can either break out the displays into multiple screens/programs, or get off the green screen altogether. Since 5250 is a dying technology to use for customer applications, I don't see any sense in adding functionality to something we are trying to get off of.
